The Sacred Art of Reflection: Why I Commit to My Year-End Journey
"Your end-of-year reflection and intention setting process is over the top, it’s not normal," a good friend recently told me. While I wasn't hurt by her comment, this observation made me pause and reflect on why I cherish my annual ritual of looking back and dreaming forward; and why I protect it so fiercely.
Yes, I acknowledge the privilege of having time and space to indulge in this process – my children are grown, I'm not actively caregiving, and I've chosen to stay home during the holidays. But here's my truth: I've always carved out this time, even in life's busiest seasons. Because I believe this practice is not a luxury – it's essential nourishment for the soul.
Endings are powerful teachers. They're not just conclusions, but doorways to understanding, celebration, and transformation. The way we approach endings – whether of a year, a chapter, or a phase of life – reflects how we embrace life itself.
Each ending carries the seeds of new beginnings, and these transitions deserve our attention and reverence.
When we deprive ourselves of this essential reflection time, the costs are subtle but significant.
We risk becoming passengers rather than pilots in our own lives, letting circumstances and others' expectations shape our path. Without intentional pauses, we can lose touch with our inner compass, making decisions that align with external pressures rather than our true desires.
The accumulation of unexplored experiences and unprocessed emotions creates a subtle but persistent disconnect – from ourselves, our dreams, and our potential. Like a garden left untended, the seeds of our aspirations and growth opportunities may lie dormant, waiting for the nurturing attention they deserve.
Why do I dedicate this time to reflection and reimagining? Because it's more than just planning – it's an act of self-love and intentional living:
It allows me to hear my soul's whispers above life's constant noise
It reminds me that I'm the author of my own story, with the power to write new chapters
It grounds me in the present moment while opening windows to future possibilities
It reconnects me with my deepest truths and boldest dreams
This process isn't about rigid goal-setting or harsh self-improvement. Instead, it's a gentle exploration of how you want to feel, what you want to create, and where you want to direct your precious time and energy. It's a loving roadmap that honors both your dreams and your reality.
I know you're busy. Life is overflowing with responsibilities – young children, family obligations, holiday commitments, and countless other demands. But I invite you to consider: What if you could create just a small pocket of space for yourself? A moment to breathe, to dream, to acknowledge your journey?
You don't need a week or even a day. Start with an hour.
Find a quiet corner. Light a candle. Open your journal. Give yourself permission to explore what's in your heart.
Because here's what I know for certain: This process of reflection and reimagining isn't selfish – it's sacred.
It's not indulgent – it's essential. You deserve this gift of time and space to honor your journey, celebrate your resilience, and dream into your future.
Your story matters. Your dreams matter. And most importantly, you matter.
