The Profound Impact of Anchors and Kites on Our Lives

We learn so much from our kids, especially when they become adults.

Recently I was visiting my oldest son. It is rare that we have time alone without other family around, without it being a holiday or without distraction.

But when we find that beautiful moment when we can be present with each other and quiet the noise around us, I find that we connect in a deeper way with far more interesting conversations.

During this visit, we talked about friendships and relationships. He introduced me to the concept of Anchors & Kites; and seeking out friendships and relationships that allow us to become the best version of who we are.

I have reflected quite a bit on this concept.

Anchors: The Bedrock of Our Stability

Anchors, in the literal sense, tether ships to the seabed, providing stability and security. Similarly, in our lives, Anchors are those individuals who keep us grounded. They remind us of our core values and help us face life's storms with resilience. They're not just the voices of caution but the embodiments of wisdom, guiding us through life's ebbs and flows with a steady hand. However, it's crucial to differentiate between true Anchors and weights that hold us back. True Anchors provide a foundation without stifling our growth – a base from which we can explore, knowing we have a safe haven to return to.

Kites: The Symbol of Our Aspirations

Conversely, Kites are the embodiment of freedom and aspiration. They soar high, catching the winds of our dreams and ambitions, inspiring us to reach greater heights. Kites in our lives are those who encourage us to dream big, to explore beyond our comfort zones, and to envision a future that stretches the limits of our imagination. They are the ones who see the potential within us, even when we are blinded by self-doubt, and they challenge us to pursue our highest visions.

The Delicate Dance of Balance

The magic happens in the balance. Leaning too heavily on our Anchors might keep us too grounded, wary of taking the leaps that lead to growth. Conversely, being swept away by our Kites without a grounding force could lead us into realms of impracticality or unattainable dreams. The key is in curating a circle that offers both: guidance to keep us true to our essence and the inspiration to pursue the grandest vision of our lives.

Curating Your Circle of Influence

So how do we intentionally curate a beautiful blend of anchors and kites in our lives?

  • Self-Reflection: Begin with a deep dive into your current circle. Who are your Anchors and Kites? Reflect on the value they bring and how they align with your journey.

  • Seek Diversity: A vibrant circle includes a variety of perspectives. Seek out new relationships that challenge and complement who you are and what you want.

  • Nurture Your Circle: Relationships thrive on reciprocation. Be an Anchor and a Kite within your circle, offering stability and inspiration.

  • Embrace Change: As we evolve, so do our needs from our circle. Be open to letting go of relationships that no longer serve your growth and welcoming new ones that do.

Who we choose to surround ourselves with has a profound impact on our journey through life. The Anchors and Kites among our friends, family, and mentors not only shape our present but cast a mold for our future. By consciously curating a circle that embodies both stability and aspiration, we can navigate life's many twists and turns with confidence; knowing we have the support to explore freely and the wisdom to stay true to our course.

So, as you reflect on your own sacred circle, ask yourself: Do you have a beautiful blend of Kites and Anchors? And more importantly, how can you be a better Anchor and Kite in the lives of those you hold dear?

Navigating the delicate balance between these forces can transform our relationships, our perspectives, and ultimately, our destinies. Here's to finding your balance and soaring to new heights, anchored in wisdom and lifted by dreams.

I hope this exploration offers a new lens through which to view your relationships and inspires you to cultivate a circle that truly resonates with who you are and who you aspire to be.
